Google + Siri – Google Now Apple’s Search Provider for iOS

What does it mean for your business?

iOS 11 said goodbye to Bing as the search provider for Siri voice searches in favor of Google to provide a “consistent web search experience” across Apple devices. What does this mean for your business? It’s pretty simple, if you’re not ranking high in Google search for relevant search terms, you are missing out on loads of mobile traffic and potential customers. Furthermore, if you currently rank well in Bing search results, you will almost certainly see a decline in mobile search traffic to your website.

Google + Siri = Mobile Search Monopoly

More than 60% of all web searches are performed on mobile devices, 20% of which are voice searches. As of March 2017, there were 715 million iPhones in use worldwide. With the release of iPhone 8, 8 Plus and the much anticipated iPhone X, there are sure to be more. With Apple’s move to Google on iOS, Google now facilitates 98% of mobile searches…

This shake up has huge implications for brick and mortar businesses whose customers often look up the business and its competitors on a smart phone before visiting, or use voice search to quickly find a nearby service.

So, how do I ensure my website ranks in Google search?

This is the million dollar question and there is no cut and dry answer. There are a myriad of ranking factors which Google uses to determine how to rank your website. Some of the major factors include, link referrals from other sites, business signals such as service category and proximity to searcher and loads of others which Google is constantly shifting and updating.

Depending on industry competition, maintaining a decent rank in Google can be tough. But holding a high rank has obvious advantages. According to Smart Insights, the difference in clicks on sites in Google’s first position versus second position is over 20%.

Feeling overwhelmed? Don’t fret, ranking your site on Google’s first page is achievable. A good place to start is verifying your business by claiming your Google My Business page. Hopefully you have already done this. If not, this is the first step to Google-proofing your business. You can also check out my post on other web strategies to amplify your Google presence.

Next, see where you stack up against your competition. Head over to SERPs Rank Checker and enter your website address, location and a keyword you think a potential customer may search in Google to find you. Hit Go and see where you rank. Jot down the results then try other keywords.

The goal is to rank in the top 10 positions which will land you on the first page of Google’s search results.
